JJ Devereaux and Christian Cherene were recently guest speakers at Antioch Seattle as part of the BA in Liberal Studies course, Media for Social Change, which is taught by filmmaker, Seattle Films founder, and Antioch Core Faculty BJ Bullert.
Deveraux and Cherene visited as representatives of fearless360º. They are also part of an award-winning art/tech collective based in Barcelona, Spain that created the BeAnotherLab.
BeAnotherLab offers participants the opportunity to utilize virtual reality to experience what it can be like to live as someone else. To be another person. As their website explains, “Scientific research of ’embodiment’ systems using VR has shown that inducing a perceptual illusion of inhabiting another person’s body has great potential in reducing implicit racial bias and promoting altruism.”
As guest speakers at Antioch, Deveraux and Cherene shared stories about the challenges and impacts of their work. They discussed the ethics of immersive media making and the promise of the technology to bridge diverse lived experiences through storytelling.
